Dubai International Airport

Client: Dubai Department of Civil Aviation

L&B in association with Dar Al Handasah were engaged in a study to assist the Airport to identify the ultimate capacity of Dubai International Airport in the UAE.

The study consisted of working with, and adjusting, the 2020 forecast schedule for Dubai and applying modelling and operational research techniques to ascertain the staged triggers for stand, apron and airfield improvements and the ultimate capacity at the existing site constrained airport. This included provision for a changing fleet mix for Emirates (A380 growth) and the rapid growth of Dubai based short haul/LCC – Fly Dubai airline with an all Code C fleet.

L&B used its proprietary gate allocation software GMS to optimize stand capacity and applied TAAM modelling to assess the capacity of the airfield system which consists of close spaced, staggered, parallel runway system.

At a macro level, the study also considered other potential capacity constraints including terminal concourses and GSE airside roads. The study identified the operational changes that would need to be implemented to achieve optimum capacity and identified the limiting constraint.

L&B worked with the airport to optimize the taxiway, stand layout and terminals such that a balanced provision of facilities can be planned.
